Biography - Michael Sax

Blue Dragon Herbalist

On his 15th birthday in 1967, Michael received Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching. Reading it, he was struck by its clear, simple, timeless truths. Respect for the Earth and a growing interest in the environmental movement, compelled him to reject the family business, distribution of lawn chemicals such as insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. One of these, the herbicide 2-4-D, comprised 50% of “Agent Orange” that the U.S. was using to defoliate the jungles of Vietnam. Unfortunately, just as many American soldiers (and Vietnamese) had liver problems from exposure to Agent Orange, Michael, his brother and his sister all got hepatitis. At 22, Michael was bedridden for months as Western Medicine had no treatment for hepatitis. The Doctors didn’t even recommend any dietary changes to help the liver cleanse itself from the hepatitis “heat toxin.” Michael researched various forms of diet therapy, and developed a strong interest in nutrition and especially organic agriculture. But by far, the most vital element in healing his chronic liver problem proved to be Chinese herbs, which he discovered nearly a decade later.

In his final year at the State University of New York at Stonybrook, where he received his B.A. in 1977, Michael directed the first of a series of documentary films focusing on agriculture and food distribution. “Greenmarket; The Rebirth of the Farmer’s Market in an Urban Setting”, shot in New York City in 1976 and 1977, documented the beginnings of a movement that has since spread across the country. The film aired on PBS in New York and was used by the Council on the Environment of New York as a fund raising tool at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “It Works For Us” (1980) documented the Food Cooperative Movement in New York.

In the following years, working on several more documentaries on the healing arts and alternative medicine inspired Michael to enroll in Yosan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Santa Monica, California in 1992. He graduated with Highest Honors in 1997 and began a private practice. During school and after graduating, he gained valuable experience working as an herbalist and manager at a Chinese herb shop in Santa Monica from 1995 through 1998.

Michael taught the California State and National Board Review class at Yosan University from 1999 - 2001. In 1999, he also began supervising in the clinic at Emperor's College in Santa Monica, and then in the Yosan University Clinic from 2000 until 2004. In 2004, Michael left his Supervisor’s position to practice acupuncture and lecture on TCM, Herbalism and diet therapy aboard Celebrity Cruise Lines during 2004 and 2005. He was the first to introduce Chinese Herbal Medicine on a cruise line, and to the large cross section of middle America that cruises. Now, most of the cruise lines carry Chinese Herbs.

Michael founded Blue Dragon Herbs® in 1999 to bring the healing power of Chinese herbs to the U.S., in all their original potency, yet unadulterated by the toxins of modern herb farming. His personal health issues caused by exposure to herbicides fueled his goal to find the purest, chemical-free herbs as possible. He is passionate about introducing people to the tremendous healing power of TCM, as well as the vital necessity of using organic herbs and foods whenever possible, both for the health of individuals and the health of our shared planet.
